Huffman Education Foundation Prize Patrol awards more than $23,000 in teacher grants

Students at Ben Bowen Early Childhood Center reached out to high-five the Hargrave High School cheerleaders leading Huffman Education Foundation members and supporters down the campus' hallways.

The two-year-old Education Foundation awarded more than $23,000 in grants to eight unsuspecting educators across Huffman ISD campuses during the Spring Prize Patrol on April 28.

The grants fund projects and resources to enhance student learning.

"I want to thank all of you," said Diane Dalton, teacher at Ben Bowen Early Childhood Center. "The teachers are so excited to have a program like this."

Dalton was awarded $4,994.38 to fund her grant project "Eyes Have It!"

"This is to get us more seating, to get us some special things for our lights so it's not so bright in here and get some more headphones for our iPads," Dalton said.

Her students' faces lit up and little fists were thrust in the air in celebration. Some exclaimed, "That's so much money," as they looked around at their fellow students in wide-eyed disbelief.

Dalton was one of three Ben Bowen educators to be awarded grants.

Melissa Griffith, Ben Bowen PE teacher, received $2,950 to purchase developmental gymnastics equipment like mats and balance beams.

Stephanie Young's $5,067.26 grant will fund portable STEAM labs, which she equated to a science lab on wheels. The STEAM lab carts will contain a variety of materials that can be used for STEAM-based lessons. STEAM lessons incorporate elements of science, technology, engineering, art and math into learning activities. The carts also have whiteboards, making the lab an all-in-one teaching tool.

"With these portable labs, teachers will have materials for activities that will allow them to touch on all five of the STEAM domains," Young said.
